What is the experience?

Kvädö Sauna is a private wood-fired sauna in a traditional falu-red cabin at Kvädöfjärden, just south of Valdemarsvik in Östergötland, Sweden. You book the whole cabin for your group, light the stove yourself and swim in the sea from a private jetty right next to the sauna. Not a spa – a genuine Swedish sauna ritual in a nature reserve.

At Kvädöfjärden in Östergötland, just south of Valdemarsvik, you will find Kvädö Sauna – a private wood-fired sauna in a classic falu-red cabin overlooking the archipelago. This is not a spa with a reception desk and group sessions, but an authentic Swedish sauna experience where you book the whole cabin for yourself and your companions.

The ritual is simple and has stayed the same for generations: you light the stove with firewood, wait until the stones give a good löyly (steam), sit on the wooden benches while the heat rises through your body – and then walk out to the water for a cold dip. At Kvädöfjärden you swim from a wooden jetty right next to the sauna. The contrast between hot sauna and cold water is the heart of the experience, and exactly what many international visitors travel to Sweden for.

The sauna sits within and right next to the Kvädöfjärden nature reserve – a protected coastal landscape of rocks, broadleaf woods, pastures and shallow bays. You are booking a calm moment in nature, not a quick shower after the gym. Many guests combine their visit with a walk along the trails, birdwatching or simply sitting quietly by the water.

What a sauna day looks like

You park at Ekuddevägen 10, light the stove and let the sauna heat up for 1–2 hours. Then you alternate between short sauna sessions, breaks and cold dips from the jetty – usually two or three rounds. The cabin has a changing room, a wood-fired stove, two bench levels and views of the forest and water.

When you arrive at Ekuddevägen 10, you park on the property and walk down towards the water. Inside the cabin there is a changing room, a wood-fired sauna stove with stones and two levels of pine benches. The windows face the forest and the water – the light and the silence are part of the ritual.

You light the stove yourself when you arrive. Expect the sauna to need about one to two hours to get properly hot, depending on the outdoor temperature and how cold the cabin was when you started. While it heats up you can walk along the coast in the reserve, prepare firewood, fetch water from the pump on the property or sit by the jetty and wait.

When the temperature feels right, start bathing: short sessions on the bench, ideally with a little water on the stones for steam, followed by a break in the changing room or outside. Then comes the sea plunge – into the water from the jetty, a quick dip or a swim if you dare. Back out and in again. Repeat two or three times during your booking. Most guests describe it as relaxing and refreshing at the same time.

  • Wood-fired sauna with real löyly – not an electric sauna
  • Private booking – only your group in the cabin
  • Direct access to the jetty and sea swimming
  • Changing room with a bin – please leave it tidy
  • Hand pump on the property for fresh water

Prices and what is included

A booking costs 2,000 SEK whatever the season and covers your whole group – not per person. That is roughly €180 or 1,330 DKK. The price includes 4 hours on site including heating, the whole cabin, the jetty and sea swimming, and firewood for a normal session. You pay in Swedish kronor.

The price is fixed: 2,000 SEK per booking, all year round and for your whole group – not per person. For international guests that is roughly €180 or 1,330 DKK, approximate figures so you can quickly judge the price.

Each booking covers 4 hours on site, including 1–2 hours of heating. The price includes the whole cabin, access to the jetty and sea swimming, and firewood for a normal session. Payment is in SEK and the final price is confirmed when you book.

What sets this experience apart from public saunas or spa hotels is the privacy and the nature: you set your own pace, no other guests share the bench, and your sea plunge is from your own jetty at Kvädöfjärden – not from a pool or a shower.

Sea swimming and safety

The sea plunge is safe for most healthy adults if you start short: 10–30 seconds is enough the first time. Never swim alone, avoid alcohol, and get out straight away if you feel dizzy or tingling. If you have heart problems or high blood pressure, or are pregnant, talk to a doctor first. Swimming is at your own risk.

A sea plunge at Kvädöfjärden is a wonderful experience, but cold water demands respect. Never go in alone if you are unsure – always have someone on land who can help. Avoid alcohol before and during bathing. If you have heart problems or high blood pressure, or are pregnant, consult a doctor before combining a hot sauna with a cold dip.

The water is shallower close to the jetty, but the bottom can be slippery with algae and stones, especially in late summer. Move carefully, wear water shoes if you like and stay close to the jetty if you do not know the area. In winter ice can form along the edge – only swim if you know the ice can hold your weight and someone is watching.

Start with short dips – 10 to 30 seconds is enough for most beginners. Breathe calmly and get out immediately if you feel dizzy or tingling in your hands or feet. Warm up gradually afterwards; take a break in the sauna or the changing room before going out again. Read our separate guide on cold plunges for beginners if you want to prepare properly.

The Kvädöfjärden nature reserve

Kvädöfjärden is a nature reserve protecting the coastal landscape, the marine environment and biodiversity. The sauna lies next to the reserve, so you can combine your visit with walks and birdwatching. Follow the rules: stay on the paths, do not disturb animals or nesting birds, and leave no litter behind.

Kvädöfjärden is a nature reserve created to protect the coastal landscape, the marine environment and the biodiversity of the area. It has mixed and broadleaf woodland, pastures, rocky shores and shallow bays that are important for birds, fish and plants. As a guest you are welcome to enjoy nature – with respect for its protection.

Rules in the reserve include not disturbing animals and birds, not picking protected plants and keeping to existing paths and trails where there are any. The sea is part of the protected area; do not leave litter in the water or on the shore. No motor vehicles outside designated areas, and consideration for nesting birds in spring and summer, are especially important.

The sauna at Ekudden lies right next to the reserve and offers a unique chance to combine the sauna ritual with nature. Many guests walk along the coast before or after bathing. Read more in our guide to visiting the nature reserve before you come.

All year round or summer?

The sauna can be booked all year at the same price. Summer brings the warmest water, often 18–22 °C in July and August, and light evenings. Spring and autumn offer colder water (5–12 °C), fewer visitors and more peace. Winter suits those used to cold-water swimming who want a sauna in the snow.

The sauna can be booked all year round, but the experience differs between seasons. In summer the water is at its warmest – often around 18–22 °C in July and August. The days are long, you can swim late in the light nights, and nature is green and full of life.

In spring and autumn the water is colder, often 5–12 °C depending on the month, but the sauna feels extra pleasant when the air is crisp. Colours, silence and fewer visitors make these seasons popular with people looking for peace. Winter swimming needs more preparation: short dips, warm clothes ready on land, and extra care around ice.

The price is the same all year. Summer weekends fill up fast and should be booked in advance, while the rest of the year usually has good availability. Choose your season by what you want – warm water and summer feeling, or a cold dip and Nordic winter romance.

Is this right for you?

Kvädö Sauna suits anyone who wants an authentic, private sauna with a sea plunge in nature – couples, friends and families who are happy to light the stove themselves and take responsibility for their own safety. If you want spa treatments or staff on site, it is less suitable. Beginners often love it because you set the pace.

Kvädö Sauna suits you if you want an authentic Swedish sauna with a sea plunge in natural surroundings – without stress, without an audience, and with time to do the ritual properly. It suits couples, friends and families who are comfortable lighting the stove themselves and taking responsibility for their own safety in cold water.

It may not suit you if you are looking for spa treatments, want to avoid lighting a wood fire altogether, or expect staff on site. For beginners it can be perfect – a private setting where you set your own pace – but do read our guides on cold plunges and etiquette before you book.
